My Healthy 4th of July Tips

July 4th...The ultimate summer holiday. Food, booze, fun, and sun. And while life is about grabbing moments of celebration wherever we can find them, the key in my opinion, is doing it safely and in a way that leaves you feeling good, energized, happy, and healthy.

So, obviously you know what this blog is going to be about - making over your July 4th. First, let’s talk alcohol. As I’m sure you know, alcohol is not awesome for your waistline and in truth really isn’t great for your health in general. Sure, the occasional glass of wine is fine and could potentially have some health benefits, but for the most part booze should be kept to a minimum. Now I know it’s July 4th so imbibing is likely. What we do at our house is purchase some white wine, vodka, tequila, and rum. We then make low sugar versions of people’s favorites. The typical skinny margarita, the Slimmojito (see recipes below) or vodka soda with a lime. I recommend no more than two drinks. Some of you might be thinking that’s not a lot - and it isn’t. It’s enough to get a light buzz and avoid taking in tons of sugar and unnecessary calories.

When it comes to food, there is simply no reason you can’t have a delicious spread that is also great for you. Grilling on the bbq is a typical summer go-to. Do grassfed burgers and white meat turkey burgers with whole grain buns! BBQ chicken is also great as long as you don’t use too much sauce and try to use a brand like Annie’s Organic to avoid any preservatives and artificial additives in the sauce. For sides you can have grilled corn, veggie skewers, or a light summer salad. I also love to have chips, fresh salsa and guacamole. Luke’s Organics is currently my favorite brand. They have an incredible variety and their products are all sourced from family owned farms and totally organic.

Now, let’s talk about activities! What fun physical activities can you plan to keep the kids and the adults moving? If you have a pool available, throw up a net and get a game of pool volleyball going! On land, consider a game of touch football or Frisbee.

Above all, be smart and be safe. Enjoy yourself, your friends, family and loved ones.
