Dr. John La Puma is a board-certified specialist in internal medicine. He has pioneered the idea that food can be used as medicine that's tasty, and he's developed delicious eating plans to help people lose weight, lower cholesterol, slow aging, and combat childhood obesity. Dr. La Puma hosts the weekly TV segment "What's Cooking With ChefMD" as part of the TV series Health Corner, which airs Sundays on Lifetime Television.
Dr. La Puma is also a successful author. His first book for a general audience, The RealAge Diet: Make Yourself Younger With What You Eat, became a New York Times bestseller; his first cookbook, Cooking the RealAge Way , became a number one cookbook on Amazon. Both of these titles were published by HarperCollins and coauthored with Michael F. Formerly a clinical associate professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago, a professor of Nutrition at Kendall College's School of Culinary Arts, and a cook at Rick Bayless's Chicago restaurant Topolobampo, which won a James Beard Award, Dr. La Puma also graduated from the Cooking and Hospitality Institute of Chicago (now a Cordon Bleu school) in Professional Cooking, and he taught the first nutrition and cooking course for medical students in the United States, at the State University of New York.
Dr. La Puma performed his residency in internal medicine at West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Medical Center and UCLA, and he completed the first postgraduate fellowship in general internal medicine and clinical medical ethics in the United States, at the University of Chicago. Dr. La Puma is the author or coauthor of more than 50 peer-reviewed scientific papers, 150 other medical articles, and 3 medical books, including a book on continuing medical education (CME). Founding editor of Alternative Medicine Alert, the leading evidence-based newsletter for clinicians on dietary supplements and integrative approaches, Dr. La Puma is also a recognized expert in CME, informed consent, and wellness practices, and he has testified as an expert in legal cases.
