Having a rough time...

I've fallen off track big time.  I feel out of shape again, tired and a bit discouraged.  I was doing great until I started having a difficult time finding "me time" to workout.

At first my 2 year old and 4 year old would try working out beside me and it was cute.  Now, they get on my mat, try to pick up my weights and make it really hard for me to follow along with the DVD.  Instead of feeling great doing a workout, I feel stressed and distracted.

I was thinking about getting a mat for each of my boys, but our living room is tiny.  Going for a walk with my boys is hard because they don't walk at a steady pace.

My only solution is to wake up before the rest of the family to fit in a workout, but it's not the best time for me.  I'm really stiff first thing in the morning and it's painful to jump right into a workout.

I do plan on trying to take my youngest son out for walks during his nap when my oldest starts school, since the bus arrives during nap time and the only way I can think of meeting my son at the bus stop without waking my youngest is to let him nap in the stroller.

Anyone else have a difficult time finding the opportunity to workout in a way that is enjoyable?

Hi there. I too used to have the same problem when I was younger and my kids were younger. They are 25, 23 and 21 now. I used to make myself get up in the morning after my husband left for work and do my workout. Or, I would sit the kids down for lunch and do it then or when they took a nap in the afternoon. I personally like working out first thing in the morning! I have it done and it give's me energy for the day and also keeps me more focused on my diet. I know about the stiffness as I am stiff too! But I have found out that once I get moving, the stiffness subsides rather quickly. It will take a couple of workouts for you to get used to it, but you find that it will energize you and give you the feeling of accomplishment and the motivation to keep going on you weight loss journey. I hope this helps. Have a great day and don't give up!!! Just work out when you can even if it is 10 or 15 minutes here and there a couple of times a day!!

Thanks for the encouragement and ideas :)  I think I will have to try to do mornings.  If I can manage to wake up for 6:00-6:30, it should work.  This will mean a lot of discipline for me, since i can sometimes be a bit of a night owl.

There is just so much going on in my life right now that I can't afford to not exercise!  My mind doesn't function normally without it.  It's been over a month (minimum) since my last real workout and now I'm having stomach pain (probably from lack of stress relief).

Yesterday, I was shopping for new clothes and I noticed that something kept fitting funny.  It took me a few minutes before I realized that one of my shoulders was at least 1.5 inches higher than the other.  I've been having tingling in my upper back for a long while now, but never noticed all the tension in my body until yesterday.  Things have got to change pronto!

Sorry, I keep changing subjects...just have too much to say ;)  Yesterday, I spoke to a photographer friend of mine about doing a before and after photoshoot.  I believe this would motivate me a bit more.  We are doing the before shots this week and the after either in late fall or near the new year.   It would be awesome to be able to wear any dress I want for once :)

Sorry, I know I can ramble on sometimes.. ;)

Every once in awhile I realize that I'm "lopsided" -- one side of my body seems stronger or (like you) one shoulder is sitting higher.  Yoga has been a really big help for those times.  It helps me to do poses that work both sides equally, and I can actually feel the difference and work on it.  A few years ago I tweaked one of the lower neck vertebrae, and that affects my shoulder from time to time, and when I do exercises to stretch out the back (I also use something called Tru Back which is a device you lay on to straighten the spine) I don't get the tingles.

I've gotten away from doing as much as I should, especially since I'm working on circuit.  Yoga has always been good for helping stretch out the muscles that tighten up from more strenuous forms of exercise.

I can completely relate to your problem!! I have 5 kids 12, 10, 6, and 4 year old twins. I am a stay at home Mom and I was doing awesome during the school year. I had it down.....My oldest son got on his school bus about 1 1/2 hrs before my youngest 2 school aged kids and I forced myself to do a half hour workout immediately after I got him off to school and before I woke up the rest of the house. It really sucked at first because I am more of a night owl and also not ready to move yet in the mornings too. But eventually I got used to it, and actually really enjoyed the schedule. Then summer break happened and my whole schedule went out the window. I have really struggled to find a set time to workout all summer, I started missing workouts, eating crappy, all of the things that happen when you get down on yourself for not just doing it already. Then one day when I was growling at everyone in our house because I hadn't gotten my workout done, I had an epiphany, if I want it bad enough then I will make time no matter what time of day.... So with that said, I did my circuit workout last night at 11pm! Yes it really sucked to workout that late, but I still feel better because I did it, and aparently that is all that matters for my mental health ;)

As to your lopsided problem, I have never had anything that obivious happen yet. But I have noticed a difference in muscle tone from one side to the other that is also frustrating. I have tried to do a few extra reps on my weaker side to compensate for the difference.

I don't know if I helped other than to just say that you are not the only one!! Hang in there!!

Yes that helps!  For a bit, I did do workouts at night, but I worried it would affect my sleep.  But, when I think about it, I would probably sleep better exercising at night rather than not at all.  I think the only weird part of doing nighttime workouts is hearing Jillians' comment about taking the good feeling and energy we feel at the end of the workout and use it during the rest of the day lol!

Ok, I've decided I'm going to pop in the first of Jillian's DVD in sometime today.  NO excuses! :D

I'll let you know how I did :)

Dear Last,
I understand about the night owl thing! I am one myself! By the sounds of your aches and pains, you do need to work out and go get a massage after you lose your first 10 pounds! Don't worry about the rambling, I do the same myself! That comes from always being around little kids and then when you get to talk to an adult, you feel like you have to hurry up and say everything you can because it will be a few more days before you carry on another adult conversation! Like I said, I have been there!
Now, go get in a quick workout, whether it be dusting, vacuuming, or walking around the store or yard for half an hour! Some movement is better than none at all. If you would like to be weight loss buddies, I am here!
Take care and talk to you soon
Jane

Yes, I would love to be weightloss buddies.  I tried to find one on here a few months back, but no one was responding.  I also tried doing that with friends but they never stuck to it.   We have to much in common that I think this could work :)

Funny thing about the massage.  I actually have one booked for the end of September already!  I booked it a couple of weeks ago.  I guess my mind knew what was going on before my body did ;)

GREAT!! I am glad to have you as a buddy!! We only have one way to go from here and that is down...as in our weight! And up with our attitude and health!!  I am sure I will have days (as I do now) where I don't work out, but I try and stay focused and positive. If I miss a day of working out, I simply do it the next day. Same with my dieting. I am the type of person who hates to think that I cant have an ice cream cone or a cookie if I want one. So, I have one. I just try not to over do it! Or chips....those are one of my weaknesses! I will support you and encourage you all the way!! Like I said, you miss a workout or mess up on eating, no big deal!!! Just get back on track the next day and don't beat yourself up about it! I found that if I messed up or didn't exercise, I would get mad at myself and think so what, who cares! I didn't care. Now, I CARE!! This is going to be fun and challenging at times but we can do it!

You can message me on here just like we have been doing. The sight emails me that I have a message and I check them every day or 2. Keep thinking positive and stick with the program. WE CAN DO THIS!! It may be hard at first, but it does get easier. Hope you are having a good weekend!

Oh can I relate to the ice cream and chips thing!   I did find myself at a kiddie birthday party yesterday doing the right thing (at least by my lights).  There was food galore (mommy is a pastry chef and daddy a pizza nut, so you can imagine), and I managed to have only ONE small cookie, a piece of chocolate cake (but only one) and HALF a piece of cheese pizza.  Today the weight is not off target.  I ate a regular Jillian dinner last night (the party was the snack) but the husband (who ate three and a half pieces of pizza and a bunch of cookies, plus two servings of cake) didn't have dinner, he was so full (and somewhat sheepish because he immediately gained 3 lbs).

On the salty/crunchy thing, I've gotten to like "pepitas" which are toasted pumpkin seeds.  If I get a yearning for chips, I can substitute them.  Since they started the non-trans-fat chips, I've been less likely to eat chips anyway -- they don't taste right to me..  I was ticked because I've never had a problem with cholesterol, yet I too had to eat the new ones, no choice.  I like this diet because it does give you choices and lets you plug in what you do eat so you don't have to fib to yourself or anyone else.

It was interesting to note that (except for the calorie issue which is a biggie) the glycemic index on ice cream is not as bad as many other foods.  No fiber and too much fat, yes, but still doable on occasion so I don't have to feel I'm in food prison.

Dear Thinking,
Sound's like you are on a roll!! Good for you! You did good at the party! I did have some chips and cheese yesterday, but I was still with in my green number's on my food journal. Still, I shouldn't of eaten them. But hey, I refuse to deny myself anything or else I know I will just completely end up giving up. I just use portion control like you did! Way to go! Keep it up!

Lastchance 2012,
Hello there. Hope you had a good weekend! I wanted to let you know to go to the weight loss buddies page and search for  me. That way we don't have to have it on an open page. Unless you prefer to do it this way. I will look for you, (if I can figure out how) and then I will send you a request.
Take care and keep on truckin.....:)

Sorry for the lack of communication these past few days.  Between the family being sick and me shooting my first wedding, it's been CRAZY.

Yes, I will search for you on that page :)  I don't mind sharing some things openly, but I think for a buddy system I would prefer it to be private.

I will post on here to from time to time though :)

Yesterday paid a photographer friend of mine to take nice before shots of me.  Once, I reach my goal, he will take the "after" shots too.   I will then choose a shot to put side by side for the before and after reveal.  Fun huh?!!!

Hello there.
I searched for you under the find a buddy and it came up with nothing for some reason. But, once we become buddies, the conversations will be private. I hope all of your family is feeling better! Glad you did get your before picture done! Keep on working at it and have fun while doing it! Keep a positive mind! I always say positive thinking brings positive results! Now, if that would only work when I buy lottery tickets!! LOL!!
Have a good day and I look forward to hearing from you soon!!

I FULLY understand how a busy busy life can get in the way even when we try not to let it!!  My advice is to sit and talk to everyone- even the young kids- and explain to them that you need to take time for YOU so that you can be better for them...and explain to them just how much NOT doing so has affected your body and heart!!
Hope that helps!!
Mary
