The Biggest Loser: Season 8, Episode 4

Everyone selected to come to the Biggest Loser campus deserves to be there, but it is up to each player to fight to stay in the game. Each week, people get hurt, weight-loss numbers fluctuate — and the yellow line threatens to send someone home. In Week Four on the ranch, a major wrench was thrown at the Season 8 contestants and their eating habits. Get a taste of what the players went through this week.

Stay Out of the Kitchen: Normally the kitchen on The Biggest Loser is the safest place for players to eat — they know it's stocked with hand-selected healthy choices. However, Alison kicked off the week by inviting the contestants into the kitchen where they discovered that all of the cabinets had been padlocked. They were informed of their goal: to order all of their meals OUT. To continue losing weight, they would need to make informed choices from the restaurant menus that didn't break their calorie budgets. After all, they would have a life away from Biggest Loser and would need these skills when eating out at their own local restaurants. This news especially scared Tracey who had visited Dr. H earlier and been told she couldn't do anything besides basic daily activity — no working out! Cutting calories was her only way to lose weight. To kick off the not-so-easy feat, Alison challenged the contestants to a healthy eating quiz. She presented three chicken dinners, three desserts, and three drinks and asked them to choose the healthiest meal. One team at a time, they came in and examined their options. They were allowed to ask Alison as many questions as they liked. For instance, how was that chicken prepared? Is that skin on the chicken? Is there sugar in the barbecue sauce? After the teams made their picks, Alison informed them that the dinner with low-fat creamed spinach, roasted chicken (with no skin), sweet potatoes, peach frozen yogurt, and unsweetened iced tea was the healthiest dinner selection. That left the Brown, Pink, and Orange Teams in a three-way tie. To get the winning team, Alison had them estimate how many calories were in that meal. The Brown and Orange teams overbid the calories, which left the Pink Team's 385-calorie guess the closest to the meal's actual 445 calories. By winning, Pink's Amanda and Rebecca will have their home kitchens stocked with healthy foods for an entire year.

Eating out — Trainer-Style: As the contestants started ordering food at the ranch, they realized that even when you ask for things, it's tough to get exactly what you want. You can order it with no cheese and they still leave it on or you can ask for the dressing on the side, but it shows up drizzled on the salad. They're right, the only surefire way to know exactly what you're eating is to make your food at home. However, this week, that wasn't an option. It was time for Bob and me to give them hands-on training. We went to a Mexican restaurant — yeah, a place where they never would have dreamed they could eat healthy since the menus are filled with margaritas, tortilla chips and salsa, and cheesy fatty dishes. But Bob and I explained to them how to read a menu and how to control their environment (like send those chips away) and we all enjoyed our healthy meals.

Hanging On: The players were welcomed by Alison to this week's challenge, which included a giant platform angled over a pool. Alison explained that each of them were to grab the handlebars on the platform and they needed to hang on to stay in the game. If they let go, they fell into the pool below. They were warned that as the challenge went on, the platform would keep rotating more and more until it was completely vertical and perpendicular to the pool. With the Green Team's Abby's stress fracture and the Purple Team's Tracey's condition, they weren't allowed to compete, their fates were left to their teammates Allen and Coach Mo. One by one, the players dropped into the pool. It finally came down to the Green Team's Allen versus the Orange Team's Daniel. After Allen dropped, Daniel had to double-check around him because he didn't believe it — he'd won, and that meant that he and Shay had immunity from being sent home this week.

Time to Step Up: Did the locked-up kitchen affect the contestants at the weigh-in? Well, after their menu lessons and the killer last-chance workouts, we pushed them to exceed despite the eating out challenges they had all week. That included Coach Mo, who felt like his body gave out on him during the last-chance workout and he panicked, making him feel worse. After he talked with Bob, he got back on the bike and got to work. First up at the weigh-in, the Orange Team's Daniel lost zero pounds and Shay lost 5 pounds, but they had immunity from the challenge so they were safe. Most the other players pulled pretty high numbers for weight loss, but as a single player, the Black Team's Julio lost only a surprising 4 pounds. He fell below the yellow line along with the Brown Team's Liz and Danny, who lost a combined 11 pounds.

Ultimately, Julio was the one chosen to be eliminated. Back at home, he's down to 299 pounds from where he started at 407 pounds. He's more active with his family and using only fresh food to make meals. He has set a goal to be down 200 pounds by the finale.

Next Week: It's gonna be Blue versus Black. But one contestant gets to chose who is on their team and which team will go with Bob or with me. Tune in to NBC next Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET to find out who gets to control the game.
