Always Watching Her Weight
Growing up, I considered myself to be overweight because my mom always had us on some kind of diet. When I got married, I gained a small amount of weight and then gained more when I had kids. Some major stressors that also contributed to my weight gain included losing property from Hurricane Opal and breaking my neck in an auto accident. I was turning to food for comfort, and realized I had a serious problem when I could no long work as a nurse without great effort.
I went to visit a bariatric doctor out of desperation. He said I would have to try something else, another weight-loss method for sixth months, before I could be considered for the weight-loss surgery. I walked out of that appointment feeling depressed and discouraged. I called my sister and she told me all about Jillian Michaels and recommended I buy her book, Master Your Metabolism.
Getting Active
Talk about a wake-up call! After reading Jillian’s book, I realized I had done nearly everything to screw up my metabolism – aside from drinking and smoking – and it was time to change my life. I couldn’t do much as far as exercise, weighing over 400 pounds, but when I got into the pool, I felt weightless – I couldn’t tell I was sweating! I could swim for hours -- and did! I ate 1200 – 1400 calories a day and banned processed foods and high fructose corn syrup from my diet. I drank only water and read Jillian’s email every single day. The workouts were impossible at first, but I did them in the pool to make them a bit easier. In the beginning of my weight-loss journey, I would lose a pound a day, but on average I lost two pounds a week. I love how JillianMichaels.com holds me accountable to log on and keep track of daily meals and exercises – it keeps me honest.
The New Linda
My hips and waist measured 75 inches each, two years ago, and now I measure 35 in the waist and 44 inches in the hips! In January, I went surfing in the Atlantic. In June, I did my first mini-triathlon to celebrate my second-year anniversary of this journey. I never enjoyed exercise before, but now I know that I can do anything I want to! I want to be alive to enjoy my grandchildren and great grandchildren – and most of all I want to have a lap for them to sit on. I will continue to work this program for the rest of my life!
