"I can finally wear a NSYNC t-shirt that I got as a gift when I was 10 years old - and couldn't fit into. Now the shirt is too big!"
Overweight & Unhappy
I was overweight for as long as I can remember and was bullied all throughout school because of it I was never active and failed high school gym class every year because I struggled to run a mile in the recommended amount of time. Aside from holding me back physically, my weight also strongly affected my self confidence. I was too shy to talk to people in and out of the classroom and I turned to food for comfort. I would eat in excess because I never felt like I could be skinny. My first two years of college were basically spent locked away in a dorm room, not talking to anyone. Finally, I found JillianMichaels.com during my junior year and decided to give it a shot.
I found Jillian’s program by searching online. I was really excited to start because I had been trying to lose weight for so long. I was desperate to find something that would work for me. I had tried some popular liquid diets, and I had even visited a dietician — nothing worked! What appealed to me about Jillian’s program was that I could do her workouts at home. I was too scared to workout at a gym because I didn’t want to be the “fat” one who everyone else was watching. Jillian’s program gave me the freedom to complete her workouts in the privacy of my dorm room. They fit so easily into my schedule that I never missed a workout. I loved that the exercises challenged me — but that I could still do them! They pushed my limits in the best way possible.
I started watching my diet more closely — staying within my daily calorie level and tracking my “calories in versus calories out” in the Food & Fitness Journal. My weight loss journey was going well for a few months, until a family emergency struck — my mom had a heart attack. It was a real eyeopener for me and it gave me the motivation I needed to continue to get my weight under control and try to be an example for my mom. On average, I lost about 3 to 4 pounds a week!* I used the weight tracker a lot and loved seeing my weight inch closer and closer to my goal weight. In March 2012, I reached the "One-derland" (the 100’s) for the first time since I could ever remember. Seeing the numeral 1 as the first number on the scale is still sometimes unbelievable since I was in the 300s for so many years before that.
Any time I felt like giving up, I remembered a quote Jillian used to say on Losing It With Jillian. A girl on the show told her that it was, “just so hard to say no” and Jillian responded “To what? Diabetes? Cancer? Heart disease? To what?” Whenever I was tempted to eat junk food or give up on a workout, I’d remember that quote and it would keep me motivated.
Living a Different Life
I feel that getting in shape has completely changed who I am, and at the same time, I feel like it has turned me into the person that I always dreamed of becoming. The girl who would get nauseous from fear of running one mile in high school has now completed two 5K races and a half marathon! Today, I run 5+ miles outside a few times a week.
Losing weight has given me the courage to go out on dates and meet new people. I didn’t have a single boyfriend for the first 21 years of my life, but in the past year, I’ve dated several people and now am happily in a relationship with a great guy. The thing I love about the new me is that now I know I can truly achieve anything I want as long as I believe that I can. I feel like I’m no longer a person that is coasting along in life, now I am determined to be something bigger than I could ever really imagine.
I feel that this is a program that is truly excuse-less. You don’t need equipment or have to leave the house to do these workouts and there’s a fitness level for anyone, beginner or advanced. Jillian also specifically tells you how many calories to eat and even specifically what to eat with her meal plans.
Best Compliment: “The best — and most meaningful — compliment I’ve received is when anyone had told me that I’m their inspiration and the reason that they’ve lost weight or have gotten their family on a healthier track. There’s no better feeling in the world than feeling like I’ve changed someone’s (or a family’s) life for the better.”
Best Advice: “Believe that you CAN lose weight! I think a lot of people join a weight-loss program not really believing in what they’re doing. Once you drop the excuses and get to the point where you are focused on what you want to achieve — you will be successful! Don’t psyche yourself out before you even get started!”
Weight-Loss Milestones: “A funny milestone I reached was when I was finally able to wear a “NSYNC” t-shirt that I got as a gift when I was 10 years old — and couldn’t fit into at the time. Now the shirt is a size too big!”
