The American Heart Association (AHA) recently coined the term the "Salty Six" to refer to common foods that may be loaded with excess sodium and can increase your risk for heart disease and stroke. I know what you're thinking: It's probably chips, fries, and other snacks — the usual suspects. In actuality, excess sodium is in a lot more foods than you would think. This probably explains why the average American consumes about 3,400 milligrams of sodium per day — more than twice the 1,500 milligrams recommended by the AHA.
