Biggest Loser Recap: Choosing Sides

This week, the competitors faced some major fears, found their balance, and showed which relationships they honored at the Ranch. Of course, lots of drama carried the competition all the way to the scale. Here's how it all played out.

Facing Their Fears: For a different kind of workout this week, both teams tried some new, daring activities to show how tough they really are. Bob's Blue Team went to a gym equipped with fabric trapezes, which required some major upper- and lower-body strength to hang onto and balance on. Also, they took a self-defense class in which they practiced against a mock assailant in a giant helmet to learn what they would do in that type of situation. Bob got a big kick out of Amy P.'s southern charm as she tried to kick around her opponent oh so politely. While the Blue Team stayed indoors, my Black Team went outdoors to a ropes course. All of them hit some major triumphs — Phil did a "leap of faith" from 35 feet up, and Michelle and Renee walked toward each other on a balance beam perched high above the ground. However, with her fears of heights and falling, Coleen needed a little extra convincing to up there on that tiny platform for the leap of faith. She was really freaked out, but she eventually jumped, showing how in control of the situation she was. I was so proud of all of those guys!

Doctor Is In: All the contestants got to see Dr. Huizenga again to see their progress. After several tests, each of them were proud of what they had accomplished in just six weeks. Michelle, Renee, and Amy C. had reduced their biological ages. Phil showed he could now touch his toes, and Amy P. had 20 percent reduction in her abdominal volume (a measurement that accounts for two types of abdominal fat). Coleen had the heart of a 55-year-old when she got to the Ranch, but when Dr. Huizenga recalculated, he found her heart health was now comparable to that of a 30-year-old... that's a definite improvement, but she still needed to get down to a 24-year-old heart-health level. So there was good news, but still more work to do!

Balancing Act: For this week's challenge, each team had to walk on a circular balance beam over a gigantic pool of water. Each time a team member got around the entire circle completely, the team received a point, and the first team to earn 25 points won. If a player fell off the beam, he or she was out, and if both teams fell in the water, the challenge started again. One by one, the entire Blue Team fell off their balance beam first, while my Black Team stayed focused and kept walking. Eventually, Black Team members did fall, but walking that beam at the ropes course must have helped Renee, because she kept on without flinching for nine more laps by herself. The final score was 25 to zero — way to go, Black Team! For winning, my team thought they would get videos from home...but then they were surprised with live chats with their loved ones. It was a big morale boost for them to really talk with their loved ones about what was happening in their lives.

Showing Alliances and Weighing In: After some killer last-chance workouts in which Bob and I pushed our players way past "I can't," some major drama surfaced. My Black Team's Phil approached the Blue Team's Brady and Vicky and told them that if Blue Team had to eliminate a player, they should send Heba home and keep his wife Amy P. in the competition. Brady and Vicky obviously didn't like that and immediately went to Heba to tell her the news. At the end of the day, my Black Team pulled a 29-pound weight loss, while the Blue Team lost 24 pounds and fell below the yellow line. When they went to the elimination room, the majority felt Amy P. was the one who needed to go.

Back at home, Amy P. is a happy, healthy mom who's now able to go horseback riding with her son. Since starting at the Ranch, she has gone from a size 20 dress to a size 8!

Next Week: Think that rope course was scary? The next episode's challenge will take the teams to the extreme. Plus, for the first time ever, a single person's weight loss will beat an entire team's weight-loss number. Will it be Black or Blue? Tune in next Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET to find out!
